John Berton (Treasurer)
John Berton is a lawyer with decades of experience in major law firms such as Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen and Hamilton LLP (1992-1998). He served in-house as a Vice President and Assistant General Counsel, and later Associate General Counsel, in the legal department of and Goldman, Sachs & Co. (1997-2008) and most recently as Counsel in the legal department of Jane Street Capital, a proprietary securities trading firm (2008-2010). Berton’s areas of expertise are corporate and securities law, broker-dealer regulation, equities capital markets, hedge funds, venture capital and general corporate advisory work.
He brings extensive legal and financial leadership and oversight to the Campaign. After practicing corporate and securities law on Wall Street, Berton opened his solo practice, Berton Law, in 2011. The firm provides general corporate advice to starts up, small companies and individual entrepreneurs.
Berton serves as trustee and treasurer for two international human rights advocacy groups: the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran, and Justice Trust, which focuses on rights abuses in Myanmar. Berton graduated from Harvard Law School in 1991, with training in corporate and securities law.
