For more than three decades, Javad Larijani has held high positions within the Iranian government in which he has categorically denied well-documented human rights abuses, positions which have brought him immeasurable power and raised questions about his wealth. On July 8, 2012, Larijani publicly denied the existence of political prisoners in Iran in an interview with ISNA. In the same interview, when asked about accusations of illegal land-grabbing and allegedly fraudulent agricultural loans, he replied, “I am proud to be a farmer and a rancher. Agriculture is a tradition in our family.”
