Cartoon (28): “No Political Prisoners in Iran”
“No Political Prisoners in Iran”
Following the submission of UN Special Rapporteur Ahmed Shaheed’s third report on the situation of human rights in Iran, the head of Iran’s High Council for Human Rights Mohammad Javad Larijani repeated Iranian officials’ denial of executions of political prisoners.
Earlier this year, in July, Javad Larijani stated, “There are no political prisoners inside the Islamic Republic of Iran.” Just last week, on October 17, Larijani’s brother Sadeq Larijani, Iran’s Head of Judiciary, claimed, “No one is executed in Iran for their political convictions.”
In his recent report, which will be debated at the UN General Assembly on October 24, Shaheed states, “The Special Rapporteur joins the Secretary-General in his concern about . . . the increasingly frequent application of the death penalty, including . . . in cases of political prisoners.”
