Cartoon 64: The Actress and the Vote
On October 28, the mother of prominent actress Pegah Ahangarani told the Iranian Student News Agency that Ahangarani has been under a travel ban since 2011 and that Judge Moghiseh of a Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced her to 18 months in prison. While the details of her charges are unknown, Ahangarani was a public supporter of the opposition candidates in the disputed 2009 presidential election.
Pegah Ahangarani, a popular actress and young filmmaker was arrested on July 10, 2011, when she was allegedly planning to cover the Women’s World Cup in Germany for Deutsche Welle. One week after her 2011 arrest, Tehran’s Prosecutor confirmed her arrest at a press conference, saying, “investigations about her continue,” and postponed answering all questions. Deutsche Welle Persian reported that a day before Ahangarani’s scheduled flight to Germany, she had been summoned to the Intelligence Ministry and threatened with arrest.
