Cartoon 81: Ebtekar Newspaper Banned for Reporting Prison Chief’s Ousting
Ebtekar Newspaper was banned after it published news pertaining to removal of Head of Iran’s Prisons Organization from office after an April 17, 2014 brutal raid on prisoners.
Following a violent raid on political prisoners inside Evin Prison’s Ward 350 on April 17, which left many prisoners injured, denied medical care, and some transferred to solitary confinement, on April 22, 2014 Gholamhossein Esmaili, Head of Iran’s Prisons Organizations, appeared on the Iranian state television to provide details about the raid. Two days later on April 24, 2014, Head of Iran’s Judiciary removed Esmaili from his position and appointed him to the position of Head of Tehran Judiciary. The Judiciary officials insisted that the appointment was a “promotion” for Esmaili. Touka Neyestani’s cartoon focuses on yet another newspaper ban in Iran.
