Agencies Providing Social Services to People with Disabilities
The State Welfare Organization (SWO) serves people with all types of disabilities across the country, as well as other socially vulnerable groups.[21] The SWO has offices in all major cities and most towns. For people with disabilities the SWO focuses on disability prevention, rehabilitation, and empowerment.[22] This includes providing rehabilitation services and equipment, running and monitoring residential institutions, paying disability pensions and nursing allowances to those found eligible, and reimbursing education tuition for some students with disabilities.
The Foundation of Martyrs and Veterans Affairs (FMVA) has a narrow mandate to serve the roughly 565,000 veterans with disabilities.[23] Both the SWO and FMVA serve as government focal points for matters relating to the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).[24] In addition, the Imam Khomeini Relief Committee (IKRC) is a government charity mandated to support the poorest and most disadvantaged populations including some persons with disabilities.
