The World Cup qualifying match between Iran and South Korea coincided with the Tasoua religious holiday in Iran, prompting some religious and military factions to demand the match be canceled. Four years ago FIFA had turned down Iran’s request to change the match date. With great popular support, the match went ahead despite efforts by hardliners to disrupt it.
