Mehdi Noori
Mehdi Noori (21), a student at Azad University of Naghadeh, is imprisoned in Tabriz Prison. He was convicted of “endangering national security” and sentenced to two years imprisonment.
Security forces detained Noori in June 2006 following public protests in the city of Naghadeh. He was held for 80 days and was reportedly tortured. The authorities released him on bail on September 10, 2006.
He was arrested on May 8, 2007 in the city of Naghadeh and imprisoned in Oromiye prison. The Third Branch of Revolutionary Court charged him with “acting against national security” and “collusion to commit crimes against national security.” The court sentenced him to seven years in prison and three years of internal exile. He appealed the court’s ruling. The Appeals Court of Western Azerbaijan province reduced his sentence to two years imprisonment. He was transferred to Tabriz prison where he is serving his sentence.
