Behrouz Safari

(13 March 2008) Behrouz Safari, detained in late May 2007, is a political activist from the city of Zanjan. After several months of detention, the authorities released him on bail in the amount of 800 million Rials ($88,000) in March 2008.

During the first five months of Safari’s detention, he was held in the Intelligence Ministry’s detention center in Zanjan. On November 3, 2007, he was transferred to Zanjan’s Safarabad prison. A month later, he was transferred to Tehran’s Evin prison and held in ward 209.

The authorities threatened to detain his family if they publicized his case. On August 28, 2007, Safari’s wife, Leila Heidari, was also detained after she went to Zanjan prison to visit him.

The authorities released both Safari and Heidari in early March 2008 after posting bail.
