Cartoon 89: Continued Arrests of Journalists in Iran
Jason Rezaian, the Washington Post correspondent in Tehran, and his wife, Yeganeh Salehi, a correspondent for UAE’s National newspaper, were arrested on the night of July 22, 2014, after their homes were raided by security forces. The agents also confiscated their personal belongings, including laptops, books, and notes, a source told the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran. The couple have remained in custody ever since, with no official information about their charges and their detention location, and without access to their families or lawyers. The couple’s arrest emphasizes the ongoing crackdown on Iranian intelligence organizations on journalists, and the Iranian Judiciary’s apparent total lack of independence in the matter. This is cartoonist Touka Neyestani’s take on the situation.
