Imprisoned Student Activist’s Husband: “We Have Problems Getting Medicine to Her”

Student activist Mahdieh Golroo’s husband, Vahid Lalipoor, has told the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran that he has problems delivering medicine to his wife at Evin Prison. Lalipoor said that during his recent visit with  his wife, he discovered that she is suffering from severe intestinal pain.  “Ever since Mahdieh was in solitary confinement inside Ward 209 and went on a hunger strike, she has developed serious intestinal problems which persist.  We have problems getting her medicine to her,” he said.

Regarding his visitations with his wife, Lalipoor added, “According to the law, each prisoner can have one in-person visit per month, but we are deprived this right. We were told that Mahdieh’s case file has been forwarded to Branch 54 of the Appeals Court. We went to that branch in order to request a reduction of her $500,000 bail, but we were told they didn’t know anything about her case. We are waiting for her definitive sentence. Mahdieh’s activities were not illegal. She was active in the Council to Defend the Right to Education. She worked for the rights of all citizens to an education. Her charge and charges of two of her cellmates are also related to this.”

Mahdieh Golroo is a student activist who has been in prison since 3 November 2009.  The lower court sentenced her to two years and four months in prison.  Currently, Shiva Nazar Ahari, Mahboubeh Karami, Shabnam Madadzadeh, and Mahdieh Golroo all share the same cell.
