Behrouz Karimizadeh
UPDATE: (15 October 2008) Behrouz Karimizadeh, a member of the Equality and Freedom-Seeking student group, was arrested by security forces on 3 November 2007, one day before a planned student rally at Tehran University. He was tortured severely while in solitary confinement in Section 209 of Evin Prison until 21 March 2008. His condition was so bleak that he attempted suicide. Because Karimizadeh was not given his medication for kidney ailments he developed a bladder infection while in custody. Eventually, he gathered funds to pay his $312,907 (3 billion Rial) bail and was freed from Evin Prison. Despite having fled the country because of persecution for his peaceful activities, Karimizadeh was summoned to Court on 26 August 2008.
Behrouz Karimizadeh, arrested on November 3, 2008, is a student activist. He is being held in Evin prison. Karimizadeh and more than 60 other students were arrested during a nationwide sweep between November 2007 and January 2008.
In February and March, the authorities released most of the detainees, but only after collecting heavy bail amounts in the range of 500 million-2 billion Rials ($55,000-$220,000). As of March 5, 2008, Karimizadeh and five other students remained in detention.
