Gissou Nia to Join the Campaign as Deputy Director
(July 14, 2014) The International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran is very pleased to welcome Ms. Gissou Nia as the Campaign’s new Deputy Director. Ms. Nia will be joining us as of November 2014.
Ms. Nia brings to the Campaign deep knowledge of international law and human rights issues in Iran, as well as extensive non-profit leadership experience.
Ms. Nia served as Executive Director of the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center (IHRDC) during 2011-2014. Under her leadership, IHRDC produced comprehensive human rights reports and documentation on political prisoners, women, ethnic and religious minorities, and other marginalized groups.
Prior to her tenure at IHRDC, Ms. Nia worked on war crimes trials at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) where she represented former government ministers from Bosnia and Kosovo in pre-trial, trial, and appellate proceedings. Ms. Nia also assisted in proceedings at the International Criminal Court (ICC) related to allegations of crimes against humanity committed during the 2007/2008 post-election violence in the Republic of Kenya.
Ms. Nia completed her undergraduate studies in political science at the University of California – Los Angeles and received her law degree from Rutgers University – Camden School of Law. She lectures and publishes widely on human rights developments in Iran, as well as the rule of law in post-conflict and transitional societies. Her work has been profiled by NPR, CNN, BBC, Al Jazeera, Forbes and other major media outlets.
