Cartoon 121: Justice Through Amputation
The Iranian Judiciary carried out a double limb amputation sentence on August 4, 2015, where a convict’s foot and fingers were amputated for robbery. This is cartoonist Touka Neyestani’s take on the Iranian justice system’s continued use of cruel and irreversible punishments in direct violation of Article 7 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights to which Iran is a signatory. Article 7 stipulates, “No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.”
